Koyo Autumn Leaves

Kyoto is famous for its vibrant autumn leaves, known as koyo in Japanese. The best time to experience this is during the last two weeks of November.

This makes Kyoto one of the top fall destinations. Just like hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in spring, the Japanese enjoy momijigari (red leaf hunting) in autumn. This tradition, which began in the 8th century among aristocrats, is still popular today. While momijigari refers to red maple leaves, it’s also a chance to admire all the season’s beautiful foliage.

Map with Best Spots for Autumn Colors

To help you enjoy the season, Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto has created a special map. It highlights the best spots around the city to see the stunning autumn colors. The Concierge suggests visiting Kyoto’s temples at night for a unique leaf-viewing experience.

Some top recommendations are Kodai-ji Temple, Entoku-in Temple, and Kiyomizu-dera Temple, all within a 20 to 25-minute walk from the hotel.

For a more peaceful and private experience, the Hotel’s own Shakusui-en pond garden offers a perfect spot to enjoy the autumn colors away from the crowds.

About Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto

The heart of the hotel is the 800-year-old Shakusui-en, a pond garden that firmly grounds this contemporary hotel in tradition, artistry, and natural beauty.

Come morning, watch the sun illuminate the landscape outside your room’s floor-to-ceiling windows – cherry blossoms in spring, rich greenery in summer, vibrant red foliage in fall, and snow-kissed mountain peaks in winter.

Impressive features include:

  • 123 luxury Guest Rooms & Suites, and 57 residential Suites
  • Sushi superstar Rei Masuda helms Sushi Wakon, serving Edo-style sushi at a 200-year-old cypress counter
  • Accessed by a glass bridge, the real stunner is the traditional tea house, Shakusui-tei, which hosts evening sake tastings
  • A world-class Spa. The Spa occupies two floors, a haven of Kyo no Iyashi (Kyoto healing) with seven treatment and wellness-technology rooms, including a VIP couples’ spa suite
