Prague in December: Christmas Markets, Culture & Cozy Luxury

Sometimes the most surprising destinations are the ones closest to home. Prague is just a 60-minute flight from Amsterdam, yet I can’t believe it took me this long to finally experience it. Visiting in December turned out to be pure magic — festive and wonderfully atmospheric. If you’re looking ahead to December 2026, put Prague firmly on your list.

Where I Stayed: Fairmont Golden Prague

I stayed at the newly opened Fairmont Golden Prague, and the location couldn’t be better, in Old Town, and perfectly positioned for exploring the city on foot. And steps from Pařížská Street, Prague’s most famous luxury shopping boulevard, lined with iconic fashion houses and elegant boutiques.

The hotel itself is impressive in scale, but it never felt overwhelming. One of my favorite features was the indoor–outdoor pool, where automatic doors open to the outside. Swimming in winter air is incredibly invigorating and such a treat during the colder months.

If you’re a beer lover, add this to your list: The Greenhouse at Fairmont Golden Prague, where the final stage of the brewing process is done in-house. It doesn’t get fresher than that, and Prague has many bars that proudly finish their brews on site.

Fine Dining Highlight: Zlata Praha

A standout evening was dinner at Zlata Praha, the hotel’s fine dining restaurant. The experience was elevated in every sense, led by chef Maroš Jambor, who previously worked at one of the world’s best restaurants, Eleven Madison Park, in New York. Elegant flavors, impeccable presentation, and views that make the evening unforgettable.

Christmas Magic in Old Town

No December visit to Prague is complete without a visit to the Christmas Market at Old Town Square. Think twinkling lights, wooden stalls, festive music, and that unmistakable holiday feeling. It’s busy, yes, but absolutely worth it.

Another memorable moment happens every day in December at 4:00 PM on the Charles Bridge, when lanterns are lit. Many people were holding cameras in front of us, but thanks to the very tall lamplighter with a long lighting stick, we still had a clear view.

And while you’re at the markets, don’t miss a Trdelník, also known as a Chimney Cake. Warm, sweet, and utterly delicious, a must-do.

A Must-Do Lunch: CottoCrudo at Four Seasons Hotel Prague

Lunch at the Four Seasons Hotel Prague is an absolute non-negotiable. CottoCrudo delivers amazing food paired with a beautiful, relaxed ambiance overlooking the river.

My insider tip? Order the tiramisu. You won’t regret it.

Culture & Architecture: National Museum

We also visited the National Museum, and I completely fell in love with the interior. The architecture is stunning, and the cupola alone is worth the visit. It’s one of those places that quietly takes your breath away.

A Very Specific Wish (and a Happy Surprise)

I traveled to Prague with my youngest daughter, and she had one particular thing on her list: seeing a nutria. These large, semi-aquatic rodents, originally from South America, have become a surprisingly common (though invasive) sight along Prague’s Vltava River.

When we asked the concierge where to find them, he looked genuinely surprised… but still pointed us in the right direction. Sure enough, on Střelecký Island, we found them. A small moment, but one that made the trip extra special.

Visiting in Summer? One More Tip

If you’re planning a summer visit instead, book a table at MIRU, the Japanese rooftop restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Prague. The views of the Vltava River with Prague Castle in the background are spectacular, one of the best vantage points in the city.

Final Thoughts & Bookings

Prague in December is festive without feeling forced, historic yet lively, and incredibly rewarding for travelers who appreciate culture, cuisine, and thoughtful luxury.

From Christmas markets and lantern-lit bridges to world-class dining and unexpected wildlife encounters, this city truly surprised me.

And now I’m wondering, how did I not come here sooner?

If you’d like help planning your own Prague escape, you know where to find me.
