Cologne has long been one of Germany’s most captivating family city-break destinations, and in 2026, it’s getting a landmark hotel to match. The Althoff Dom Hotel, one of Europe’s oldest grand hotels, with roots dating back to 1840, is reopening after an extensive renovation and is shaping up to be one of the most exciting luxury openings in Germany this year.
The location alone is hard to beat. Situated right on Roncalliplatz, directly beside Cologne Cathedral, the hotel puts one of the world’s great Gothic landmarks practically on your doorstep, an experience that doesn’t get old, whether it’s your first visit or your fifth.
Spread across nearly 13,000 square meters, the reimagined hotel will offer 130 rooms and suites, five restaurants and bars (including a rooftop terrace with cathedral views that we’re already excited about), and a spa with saunas and a Technogym fitness center. The historic façade has been carefully restored, and the hotel forms part of the architecturally distinctive DomCarré ensemble, which includes the iconic 4711 building next door.
For families, the combination of that central location, 300 meters from the main train station, and genuine grandeur makes this an easy recommendation. Cologne’s chocolate museum, the Rhine riverfront, and some of Germany’s best Christmas markets (should you visit in winter) are all within easy reach.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on the opening and will update with booking details as soon as they’re available.
