Some milestones don’t call for a big party, but for memories that last a lifetime. For my 50th birthday, I decided to do something a little unexpected. Instead of celebrating at home, I escaped with my family to Edinburgh, a city we had surprisingly never visited together as a family of four.
It turned out to be the perfect way to celebrate.
Choosing the Right Hotel Makes All the Difference
Traveling with young adult children comes with different considerations. For our daughters, sharing a room with one bed was no longer an option, but staying in the same room, with (lots of) space between beds, was important. That immediately ruled out several hotels and led us to W Edinburgh.
It was an exceptional choice.
-
A spectacular location
-
A show-stopping rooftop bar with sweeping city views
-
A vibrant and stylish bar scene
-
Contemporary rooms that perfectly suited our family
As a bonus, the hotel sits right next to St James Quarter, Edinburgh’s premier destination for upscale shopping and dining. For our family, it couldn’t have been more ideal.

Experiencing Edinburgh: From Magic to Mystery
As a whisky and gin lover, a gin and whisky tasting tour was an absolute must, and Scotland never disappoints. We also immersed ourselves in the city’s stories and legends:
-
A Harry Potter walking tour, magical for all ages
-
And a descent underground for a Ghost Vault Tour
The latter was definitely a little scary (okay, only for me), but incredibly fun and unforgettable.
One detail that brought constant smiles was spotting Scottish Terriers everywhere. Our own dog, Jock, is a Scottie, and seeing his breed celebrated throughout the city, from shop windows to artwork and souvenirs, added a personal, heartwarming touch to our experience in Edinburgh.
The Small, Thoughtful Moments That Meant Everything
Some of my most cherished memories came from unexpected gestures:
- On board our KLM flight, the captain surprised me with a birthday announcement over the intercom, even mentioning my seat number. Upon landing, I was handed a gift bag with a handwritten card, bubbles, and sweet treats, pure class.
- Our daughters then took me to my favorite store in the world: LEGO. I was given the freedom to choose my own birthday gift: something joyful and unmistakably me.
- And as a final, thoughtful touch, W Edinburgh surprised me at departure with a LEGO unicorn. They had discovered my LEGO hobby through my website. The unicorn, Scotland’s national symbol, was the perfect, personal farewell.

From Inspiration to a New Luxury Itinerary
As often happens with me, the inspiration didn’t stop when we got home. This trip immediately sparked a new journey, this time designed for just my husband and me, planned for the summer months.
A 9-Night England & Scotland Luxury Journey (Oxfordshire, London, Edinburgh, and the Scottish Countryside):
-
Day 1 – 4 Private transfer from London Heathrow to Estelle Manor, Oxfordshire
3 nights at Estelle Manor -
Day 4 – 5 Private transfer from Estelle Manor to London, staying at The Connaught
1 night at The Connaught -
Day 5 – 7 Non-stop train to Edinburgh, stay at Gleneagles Townhouse
2 nights at Gleneagles Townhouse -
Day 7 – 10 Private driver from Gleneagles Townhouse to Gleneagles
3 nights at Gleneagles -
Day 10 – Private transfer from Gleneagles to Edinburgh Airport
Travel as a Way to Celebrate Life
This birthday reminded me why I do what I do. Travel isn’t just about destinations—it’s about celebrating life, milestones, and time together in a meaningful way.
If you’re dreaming of a birthday trip, anniversary celebration, or simply a beautifully designed journey that reflects who you are, I would love to create it for you.
